Benin
Benin is a least-developed Sub-Saharan country with a tradition of substantial government intervention in the economy. Benin’s GNI per capita has gone from US $ 530 in 2005 to 750 US $ in 2010. There appears to be very considerable room for improving the business climate since Benin’s rating in the WB Doing Business report has slipped from 129th in 2006 to 170th in 2011.
In some respects the life of an entrepreneur in Benin has been made even more difficult: e.g. while it took 3 procedures and 50 days to register property in 2005, it took 4 procedures and 120 days in 2010. Also, having to wait for 320 days for a construction permit will discourage any but the most determined builders.
Benin’s employers’ national and international interests are being represented by the Conseil National du Patronat du Benin (CNPB), a member of the International Organisation of Employers.
DECP undertook 2 missions to Benin, but at present no activities are being undertaken between DECP and the CNPB.
