Togo
Togo is a low-income Sub-Saharan country with an economy that used to be characterised by government intervention. Recently the government has changed course and is now moving towards a more liberal economic model. The country’s GNI per capita has gone from 380 US $ in 2005 to 440 US $ in 2011.
There is ample room for improvement of the business environment. Togo’s ranking in the WB Doing Business report has dropped from 149th in 2006 to 162nd in 2011. The worsening of the business environment is best exemplified by the data on starting a business: while this would take 53 days in 2005, it would take 84 days in 2011. Similarly with regard to registering property: this would take 212 days in 2005, as against 295 in 2011.
Togo’s employers’ national and international interests are being represented by the Conseil National du Patronat du Togo (CNPT), member of the International Organisation of Employers. DECP recently contacted the CNPT and undertook a fact-finding mission to Togo in September 2011. Cooperation between DECP and CNPT is focussed on communication and lobbying, on occupational safety and health, on negotiation techniques and on international sanitary and phytosanitary norms and standards.
