Georgia

Among the countries listed in the WB Doing Business reports Georgia has probably undergone the most substantial transformation from a planned economy to a full fledged market economy. In what can only be described as a very determined effort, the government succeeded in moving Georgia up from 100th place in 2006 to 12th place in 2011. By way of example, starting a business in Georgia used to take 8 procedures and 21 days in 2005.
In 2010 it took just 3 procedures and 3 days.
Also, Georgia’s GNI per capita has increased from US $ 1040 in 2005 to US $ 2540 in 2010.
Georgian employers’ national and international interests are being represented by the Georgian Employers’ Association (GEA) a member of the International Organisation of Employers. After a fact-finding mission in 2006, DECP has undertaken various activities on capacity building for GEA’s staff.
In November 2010 DECP co-financed a conference during which the results were presented of a survey done by GEA and UNDP among the members of GEA about the impact of the war of August 2008 and the financial crisis on the private sector of Georgia.
At present no activities are being undertaken between DECP and GEA.
