From 22 to 25 September 2013 DECP’s country manager for Burundi, J.M. Standaert, visited the Association of Employers of Burundi (AEB) in Bujumbura. The aim of the visit was to discuss and agree about a business plan for 2014 – 2017 that will be integrated in DECP’s Business plan.  AEB’s priorities include a monthly newsletter, a website, new sector federations as well as regional secretariats.

He also gathered the latest information about the feasibility of a new “mutual insurance for the health of workers of the private sector of Burundi” that is in preparation by AEB and which DECP agreed to support financially in 2012. This proposal to set-up a mutual insurance for the private sector was ordered by the minister of labour after AEB and the trade unions of Burundi rejected her proposal that the private sector should be integrated in the health insurance for the public sector. The preparatory feasibility study should be finalised by the end of October and AEB would then like to organise a forum or Round Table to get the public’s and potential members’ attention for this initiative.
